Don't Be a Hermit Bars
If you’re a New Englander, you know exactly the classic sweet spicy, soft & chewy, molasses-rich yumminess otherwise known as a Hermit Bar. If you’re not a New Englander, then this is a treat you will come to adore - and eat in copious amounts, if available!
The exact origins of these bars isn’t fully known or agreed upon, or why they’re called Hermit Bars, but it’s generally believed these cookies were traveling cookies because they kept so well for lengthy periods in earlier times, and there are many variances around regional areas. Perhaps it’s the fact that the bars would keep for such long periods of time if kept from humanity’s touch - which isn’t likely to happen once you have one - that they received the name Hermit. Another idea suggests that the bar is a spin off of a Morovian cookie, and the color resembled the hermit’s robe. (source: https://www.bonappetit.com/story/hermit-cookie-reclusive-recipe)
Regardless of the origin of the name, when I had them for the first time in my 20s, I could easily invoke nostalgic vibes when noshing on these warm, spicy, chewy delicious bars - the kind of bars a grandmother would always in her kitchen. It needn’t be cool weather because these are excellent with iced tea or whatever drink you choose to accompany them.
Just try them - you won’t be unhappy. You’ll actually be transported to a simpler time where we took a moment each day and shared a drink and a smile over a simply delicious treat.

You’ll receive 16 large, happy slices (or double that smaller bars)
